Long Hair Katsina |
Wow, what an
experience. I had been to a few dances
at the Hopi Reservation including a Home Dance last July. The Home Dance is when the Katsina’s return
to Sacred Mountain. Katsina also
spelled Kachina are Spirit Beings that come to help the Hopi with their
crops. It begins with the Bean Dance
with the first sprouts and ends with the Home Dances, which bring the
rain. They are very ceremonial and quite
private, maybe a dozen non Natives in attendance, this was the last home dance
of the season. The people who invite us
are always very gracious and friendly and offer us plenty of yummy food. Everything was delicious.
We were delighted to see
the Long Hairs dance. The face on Long Hairs represents
the clouds and the rainbow, the hair comes down around the entire head and represents the
rain. Their head dresses are simple and
amazing. Parrot feathers in mostly
yellow are flat on the head and a long Scarlet Macaw feather goes
straight up the back of the head, like the arrow in the picture.
Today, I did something
different. Rather than simply watch the
Katsina’s dance I closed my eyes and got into the melodic beat of the
music. Next thing I knew I was in a
trance state and I could see the spirit of the Katsina’s reaching up to the
clear blue skies. (cloudy skies by late afternoon) When I finally opened my eyes again I felt a
bit loopy, happy and at peace, all at the same time. It was wonderful and amazing and my Wonder
Filled Moment of the day.
In Gratitude,
Linda G
